We are a charter sailing company with a little different Mission. Our top priority is the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of our sailing patrons and crew as we strive to provide you with an exceptional nautical experience.
In addition our mission as a Charity Charter is to provide a potentially life changing experience to those under privileged and at-risk youth that might otherwise never have such an opportunity.
By signing up for an excursion aboard the sailing vessel “Impulse,” you will not only enjoy a beautiful day sailing the pristine Caribbean blue waters of West Grand Traverse Bay off Traverse City, Michigan, you will also be partnering with us in playing a vital role: in assisting us to accomplish our vision.
Our mission is to provide our guests with the highest level of safety, comfort, and enjoyment while they are in our care. Proceeds and contributions from our paying customers will be used to support our charitable mission of providing opportunities for under privileged and at-risk youth who will benefit from an at-sea experience, and to expose them to a visionary potentially life changing experience that they might otherwise
never have the opportunity to explore.
Sailing Vessel “Impulse”
The sailing vessel “Impulse” is an impeccably maintained, modern, well equipped 2006 Catalina C-310 measuring 32’6” in length with a 11’6” beam. She is Coastguard Certified to carry up to 6 paying passengers plus crew and is extremely safe and stable with a 4000 lb, 6’5” deep keel and a total vessel weight of 14,000 lbs.
She offers all the creature comforts from cockpit cushions and stern rail seating to protective dodger and sun awnings.
The luxurious cabin below is fully plumbed from the private head (bathroom) to electric refrigeration in the galley. She is a joyous, beautiful, and seaworthy
Gerry Shiffman was born and raised in Toronto, Canada where he was introduced to sailing at the age of thirteen. He quickly became infatuated with the sport, and has been expanding his knowledge and fine tuning his skills ever since.
Charol Shiffman was born and raised in west Michigan; she was always drawn to the water. Gerry and Charol have been married for thirty three years, and together they have owned and operated multiple sailing vessels, and have charted many nautical miles.
They have owned and operated “Impulse” for the past four years. With a love of sailing and their passion for bringing joy, comfort, and aid to others, they founded Seaside Sailing Excursions & Charity Charters LLC.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to book in advance?
We welcome last minute reservations, however, to not disappoint; we
recommend that you book in advance to reserve your date. Booking online is
easy; please call if you have any questions.
What should I wear?
We like to go barefoot aboard, however if you’d be more comfortable
wearing shoes please make sure that they have rubber soles and fit securely.
Keep in mind that the air temperature over the water is often 10 degrees
cooler than on land. Depending on the weather, dress appropriately. I
recommend wearing layers; shorts are fine just bring along a sweatshirt and
possibly a jacket. Don’t forget your swimsuits and towels. There is ample
room below to stow your gear. We do have blankets for you, if you need.
Are pets allowed on board?
For the safety and comfort of all our guests and crew, our four legged loved ones are not permitted aboard the vessel. Please make arrangements in advance for their protection and well being. Here are a few local boarding facilities.

Do you provide food and refreshments?
We provide bottled water, and we invite you to bring food and drinks. Small
tote coolers work well. We will also provide unbreakable cups and dishes.
Keep it simple, finger food and snacks, beer, wine, sparkling water, box juice.
What about the weather?
We are constantly monitoring the weather. We wait to make weather
decisions until about two hours before your scheduled excursion.
If the weather, as determined by the Captains discretion and experience,
poses threatening conditions of fog, lightning, or excessively high winds, we
may have to reschedule your excursion. If we are unable to reschedule your
excursion, we will refund your money. If we are underway and the Captain
returns to port due to threatening weather conditions, you will be refunded
for the time not used or we can offer you a discount on a future excursion.
What is your cancellation policy?
If your plans change we will offer you a full refund if you cancel 72 hours in
advance of your scheduled excursion. Or we can reschedule to meet your
needs based on our availability.
Should I tip the Captain?
Tipping is customary, and should be based on your satisfaction with the
service you receive. A 20% gratuity is average if you are happy with the
How many people can be in our party?
The sailing vessel “Impulse”, in accordance with US Coastguard regulations
has a maximum capacity of 6 paying passengers plus crew. If you have a
larger party, we have affiliates that we are often able to partner with and can
sail side by side. We will take care of all of the arrangements for you.
Is your sailboat safe?
The sailing vessel “Impulse” is certified; she meets or exceeds all US
Coastguard regulations for construction, stability, safety equipment and
electronics for vessels in passenger service. Your Captain is fully licensed
and is certified as a Master by the US Coastguard, he has accumulated many
years of experience and service. You can rest assured, you are in good hands.
What is your Covid safety protocol?
We take great care to protect the health and well-being of our passengers and
crew. Our crew remains vigilant and is regularly screened. All Surfaces are
thoroughly sanitized between excursions. If you or anyone in your party are
exhibiting any symptoms or have been exposed, please immediately contact
us to reschedule or cancel without penalty.
Where is the boat?

You catch the boat along the seawall at the north end of Elmwood Marina
just to the left of the launch ramps. You may pull up with your vehicle 30
minutes ahead of your scheduled excursion to drop off passengers and gear.
You will then drive back out and park at no charge in the overflow lots
behind Subway across the road on the west side of S W Bay Shore Dr. and
walk back over via the pedestrian crossing to catch the boat.
